I have a masters degree in Magazine Publishing from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, a bachelors degree in English from Wittenberg University, and more than 20 years of writing and editing experience.
My work has been featured in a variety of trade, business and consumer publications, and I have held a range of editorial positions—from proofreader to editor-in-chief. As a graduate of the Denver Publishing Institute and a writer of young adult fiction, I am also knowledgeable about the book publishing industry. Most importantly, I love words and understand the power they wield.
Born and raised in northwestern Ohio (one of the flattest places on earth), I now reside in a small Colorado mountain town surrounded by elk and evergreen trees. When not reading, writing or editing, I enjoy hiking with my golden retriever, Rocket, who is truly The Best Dog Ever.
I believe that when it comes to the way you present yourself or your company, small mistakes can yield high costs. Creators of content can easily find themselves focusing on the big picture instead of the details. When I take on a project, I give it the focus and attention to detail that it deserves.
In case you're curious, these are some of the businesses/publications in which my work has been featured: The Devine Group, Today's Hospitalist magazine, Boulder magazine, Edmunds Automotive Buyers Guides, Freeskier, Inline Retailer magazine, Boone Mountain Sports, The American College of Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine, Newspapers & Technology, Raising Teens magazine, Hofflin Publishing, and Built2XL.
Editing is not a one-size-fits-all endeavor. Editing costs are affected by the length, complexity, topic and quality of your work. My editorial rate is $40 per hour and time spent per project varies depending on the type of editing needed. Proofreading, for example, takes less time and research than a full developmental edit.
As a writer myself, I understand it is difficult to budget for an editor without knowing the full cost up front. That is why I ask for some basic information and a sample of the work. After reviewing a few pages of your writing and discerning which type of service you desire, I can give you a time/cost estimate for your specific project. For book manuscripts, I also offer a per-word or per-page rate.
My editorial rates are based on the scale used by the Editorial Freelancers Association. I also offer discounts for clients with recurring editorial needs and/or larger projects.
